From my point of view as Umpire you let the Royalists make all the choices, left your guns out on a limband didn't hold the hedge in sufficient strength. Some of this was lack of period experience without a doubt. My "School Solution" would have been a cautious advance with all arms supporting your Horse with Dragoons and Commanded shotand by advancing cutting down the Royalist manouvre options until he had little choice but to charge your foot- especially as the Royalist foot started so far behind. A risky strategy no doubt but IMHO probably better than just waiting for it.Big Andyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17235478427317774609noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6780195401099519720.post-35160926612242415872012-08-22T03:40:33.924-07:002012-08-22T03:40:33.924-07:00Dear Andy,
From our point of view as two none ECW,...Dear Andy,
From our point of view as two none ECW, some might say non-civil wargamers,if I may make so bold as to speak for both here, the plan we adopted was of course sound! It is easy with hindsight to suggest a snail mentality but the way we saw it, we would wait for the ROYALISTS to attempt the hedge which they must, and which protected us from the preponderance of excellent horse which our own horse could at least expect to stop in the obvious gap we invited them to pour through! The Dragoons would shoot them up on the way in from a position of safety and cover, beofore withdrawing. We would advance to meet them disorganised as they breached the hedge: in fact I might plead that we merely mis-imed this and that given another couple of turns we might have enjoyed just such a success. As it was we were not so baldy mauled with both our regiments of foot intact and the royalists hardly in possession of the field which was as yet being contested! If not for a roll as bad as Jeff's our cuirassiers might indeed have repelled the Royalist horse, or I had that impression? I agree we left the guns waiting like lambs for the slaughter which I would like to blame tekkiie Andrew for entirely (only kidding). In fact had I not had concerns for spoiling the enjoyment of my fellow Paliamentarian, or questioning his part, I might have been more insistant on mixing the guns in with our dragoons and also in cover of the hedge. It occurred to us that there was more than one way of skinning the Royalist cat and we considered an advance beyond the hedge bringing them onto our better foot and massing our cavalry on the one open flank, but we expected the usual cavalier dash at us - all credit to Jeff for handling them better on the day! Another good 'en, am seriously considering selling everything and doing ECW now! Scribbling Steve. Will the Royalists wreak due punishment upon the caitiff rebells for their temerity in challenging the divine right of kings, and their timorousness in skulking behind hedgerows? Or will the Malignants' malign malignancy merit mayhem among their members?
Cheers,
IonArchduke Piccolohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15533325665451889661noreply@blogger.com
